Turning $20M Into Opportunity: The Power of Political Awareness

A real story about how geopolitical risk turned a sound investment into a hard lesson — and why capital is never neutral.

A few years ago, I helped facilitate a multi-million USD investment into an African company. It was focused on affordable housing and community infrastructure—improving living conditions, creating jobs, and building lasting local capacity. On paper, it was an exceptional opportunity: trusted local partners and alliances, sound due diligence and investment outcomes, and clear social impact goals. The capital was deployed with no press and no fanfare—just strategic capital quietly invested to make a tangible difference with a solid financial return.

Soon after, the political winds shifted in this region. A new government came to power — not fully expected — and they reviewed foreign investment agreements. Funding priorities were redirected, and suddenly, what seemed like a straightforward social impact investment became a stark lesson in how geopolitics can quickly turn operational risk into reality.

This experience taught me that geopolitical risk isn't abstract or distant—it moves fast and moves money. Today, we see it everywhere: trade disputes, election outcomes, shifting political alliances—all of which can derail planned projects. Whether you are investing in real estate, private equity, or social ventures, every dollar sits inside someone else's political landscape. A government can rewrite tax incentives and community priorities can shift overnight.

You can hedge currencies and insure assets, but you cannot insure trust or political goodwill. Those are built over time, quietly and intentionally — long before you need them.

So when you read headlines about tariffs, elections, or geopolitical tensions, remember: capital is never neutral. It's political, relational, and deeply human.

The good news? By understanding this and investing in relationships, we can build resilience that turns risk into opportunity.
